The Department of Mathematics, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, is hosting a special event titled "Celebrating Women in Math at NEHU" to highlight and honor the contributions of women in the field of mathematics.
Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman mathematician to win the Fields Medal, was born on 12th May 1977. She was an Iranian mathematician and a Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University. She received the Fields Medal in 2014 for her outstanding contribution to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. She was one of the world’s leading experts in the field of geometry and dynamical systems. The whole world, particularly the world of Mathematics, was mourned on her sudden demise in 2017, only at the age of 40.
Celebrating Women in Mathematics Day!
On May 12th, the International Day of Women in Mathematics, we will launch the project “Girl Ambassadors for Mathematics” with a group of 50 selected secondary school girls. The goal is to share our passion for mathematics, highlight their significance in opening up future opportunities, and show how engaging and meaningful they can be—especially to younger students in primary school.
During the session we will have 1. Presentation in memoriam of the personality Maryam Mirzakhani and other remarkable women mathematicians. History of the celebration of the International Day of Women Mathematicians on May 12. 2. Useful discussions "between women" about the priorities and problems of the female population in professional achievement.
