Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman mathematician to win the Fields Medal, was born on 12th May 1977. She was an Iranian mathematician and a Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University. She received the Fields Medal in 2014 for her outstanding contribution to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. She was one of the world’s leading experts in the field of geometry and dynamical systems. The whole world, particularly the world of Mathematics, was mourned on her sudden demise in 2017, only at the age of 40. She was an inspiration to everyone to pursue a career in mathematics and science. To honor her contribution, 12th May, her birthday, is celebrated as “International Women in Mathematics Day”. The day is about recognizing the contributions of women in mathematics and inspiring future generations to choose career in mathematics. The International Women in Mathematics Day is a global initiative supported by various organizations, including Indian Women and Mathematics (IWM). We, at the School of Engineering & Technology, BML Munjal University, Gurugram would like to celebrate the day with an expert session by Prof Neena Gupta, a distinguished professor and a Bhatnagar awardee, currently working in the Physics and Applied Mathematics Unit at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Due to her busy schedule, the session will be conducted online via Zoom/Google Meet.
