Evento Mulheres na Matemática UFF

Good morning 🌺

This event was created to give visibility to the women researchers and students in our program, while also promoting dialogue and reflection on the challenges and perspectives of being a woman in mathematics.

Location: Room 407 – Block H (Gragoatá)
Date: Today, May 11
Time: 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM

The event is open to all students and professors.

This meeting takes place in celebration of the International Day of Women in Mathematics, observed on the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman to receive the Fields Medal.

Donne, matematica e scienza: oltre i pregiudizi culturali e sociali

Primes and Resonance: Sophie Germain’s 250th Birthday

Sophie Germain is remembered for her major contributions to mathematics, ranging from advances in number theory (related to Fermat’s Last Theorem) to foundational results on vibrating plates. She was the first woman to win a major competitive research prize in mathematics.

We will celebrate her 250th birthday with four general-audience talks, a live demonstration, and a speaker panel bringing her life and work into focus.

Una vita abbracciata all'infinito - Maria Gaetana Agnesi

The conference is organized by the interuniversity research center established between the University of Brescia and the Catholic University. The lecture, delivered by Professor Fabio Luterotti and introduced by the center’s director, Professor Anita Pasotti, is dedicated to the figure of Maria Gaetana Agnesi, one of the greatest mathematicians in history. The event will take place at the Municipal Library of Concesio.

Che GENERE di scienza?
Stereotypes, Bias, and the Social Dimension of Research

The “May12 Celebrating Women in Mathematics” initiative, now in its eighth edition, is a joyful occasion for the international mathematical community to celebrate women in mathematics: a global event dedicated to recognizing the contributions of women mathematicians and to creating spaces for participation and action addressing the structural inequalities that have shaped—and still shape—the world of scientific research.

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS

Norbert Schappacher (Strasbourg)
„The Density of Chance. Remarks on
Maryam Mirzakhani‘s life and work.“

This talk introduces the life and work of Maryam
Mirzakhani. After a brief biographical sketch, it explores
key aspects of her mathematics and shows how her
ideas transformed the field, including the celebrated
