Stereotypes, Bias, and the Social Dimension of Research

The “May12 Celebrating Women in Mathematics” initiative, now in its eighth edition, is a joyful occasion for the international mathematical community to celebrate women in mathematics: a global event dedicated to recognizing the contributions of women mathematicians and to creating spaces for participation and action addressing the structural inequalities that have shaped—and still shape—the world of scientific research.

For the 2026 edition, the GEP (Gender Equality Plan) committee of the “Guido Castelnuovo” Department of Mathematics is proposing an event, to be held on May 13th, aimed at drawing attention to the need for a more aware and critical scientific community. Nastassja Cipriani and Edwige Pezzulli will address a fundamental topic for contextualizing the contribution of female subjectivities in research: the non-neutrality of scientific research, mathematical models, and academic institutions where research activities are carried out. From a gender perspective, the speakers will highlight the crucial role of social factors in the construction of scientific knowledge and how these are reflected in the practices of women researchers.

To fully value mathematics produced by women mathematicians, beyond recognizing their research, it is essential to engage in careful and critical reflection on how such research is conducted, so that contemporary science and its applications become less biased, more socially responsible, and epistemically more robust. At the end of the seminar, the discussion will continue with a debate with the audience, moderated by Mattia La Torre, a geneticist and researcher in the Department of Biology. The event will conclude with a social gathering.
