Description and practical details

The Women in Mathematics day, first organized in 2019, celebrates women in Mathematics all over the world. It is in honor of Iranian Mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani, the first and only woman to win the Fields Medal, the most prestigious award in Mathematics. The chosen day May 12th, 1977 refers to her birthday. Maryam Mirzakhani, who was a professor at Stanford University, died from breast cancer in 2017. On 31st July 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, the Women’s Committee of the Iranian Mathematical Society presented to the participants of the World Meeting for Women in Mathematics, (WM)², a proposal that Maryam Mirzakhani’s birthday – May 12th – be recognized and supported to celebrate women in mathematics. The event takes place every year in the period of May 1 to June 15, all around the world.

The goal of the day is to inspire women everywhere to celebrate their achievements in Mathematics, raise awareness of value of Mathematics among young students and researchers and to motivate women to become leaders of innovation. The event which is proposed here, is the fourth of its sequel conducted by Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal. The event is scheduled to take place on 13-14th May, 2025 at MIT Manipal, Karnataka.

The "WMD 2025" is more than an event; it's a commitment to harnessing the intrinsic power of mathematics and channelling it through the bright minds of students and early researchers. It's an investment in a brighter future for India, one where mathematical talent thrives in breaking barriers and contributes to a more innovative, prosperous, and resilient nation.

Furthermore, we envision this conference as a recurring beacon of mathematical

excellence, with the intention to continue hosting this event annually. Through this sustained commitment, we aspire to foster a legacy of mathematical empowerment and innovation, year after year, for the betterment of both our students and our India.
