Women in Mathematics Day Lunch Salon
Through the story of Sophie Germain, participants will explore the contributions of women in mathematics and engage in meaningful discussions.
Join us for a screening of the short movie "Je suis Sophie Germain/I am Sophie Germain" -- just 15(!) minutes -- and if you like, stay for an informal discussion of the movie, the life and work of Sophie Germain, and of women in mathematics then and today.

Wednesday the 6th of March at 6:15pm we will be doing a movie night watching “Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani”. In case you didn’t know: Mirzakhani was the first female Fields Medalist. The event will take place in room 2.025 in the Computer Science Institute. There will be drinks at cost price and free popcorn! We will start the movie once everyone has gotten popcorn and drinks.
To celebrate the May 12 Initiative — which marks Maryam Mirzakhani’s birthday and highlights her mathematical contributions — we will screen Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani. The documentary presents her work on Riemann surfaces and moduli spaces, tracing her path from her early years to becoming the first woman to receive the Fields Medal.
On May 12, the screens in the atriums of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Coimbra will continuously display the films “Je suis Sophie Germain / I Am Sophie Germain” and “Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani,” in celebration of the International Day of Women in Mathematics.
